How is a dental implant placed?

At Swiss Implant Center, we mainly perform immediate implantology, which means fewer appointments, one less surgery, therefore less discomfort and faster healing.

1 Consultation and planning - initial assessment with X-rays and a detailed treatment plan.
2 Implant placement - performed under local anesthesia and pain-free.

3 Healing period - the implant fuses with the jawbone over several months (osseointegration). This depends on the patient and usually takes 6 weeks to 3 months.
4 Crown placement - once the implant is integrated, a crown is fitted to restore the missing tooth.

Follow-up: regular visits allow us to check the implant’s condition and maintain good oral hygiene. If needed, maintenance therapy may be combined with laser treatment.

Dental implants placed abroad

We care for patients with implants placed in Switzerland or overseas.

Why we can work with dozens of implant brands and systems

If you are looking for a dentist in Switzerland to maintain implants placed abroad, or you need to repair an existing implant, our team is here to help. Thanks to our unique collaboration with international partners, Swiss Implant Center can work with the most widely used implant systems such as Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Zimmer and Astra Tech, as well as less common systems used in other countries.

Many patients come to our clinics in Valais for follow-up care after implant treatment abroad, especially in Turkey, Spain, Portugal, South America, Romania and Italy. If you want to repair or maintain foreign implants, we offer safe, cost-effective and reliable solutions, without the need to remove or replace your existing implants.

Complete guide to dental implants

With over 30 years of experience and more than 15,000 implants placed, Dr Lanners, who is also an international speaker and lecturer in implantology, offers you outstanding expertise in the field of dental implants.

  • What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a modern, effective solution for replacing one or more missing teeth. Made of a small biocompatible titanium screw, the implant is usually placed directly after a tooth extraction to act as an artificial root.

Once integrated, it provides a strong, stable foundation for a crown, a bridge, or a full denture, delivering a long-lasting, aesthetic and fully functional restoration. Even patients who have lost all their teeth can stabilise and secure a denture with implants, allowing them to regain teeth and a confident smile.

Thanks to dental implantology, you can restore a natural-looking smile and improve your quality of life with stability and comfort comparable to natural teeth.

  • Why choose a dental implant?

Dental implants are not only an aesthetic solution, they also protect jawbone health and prevent the bone deterioration that follows tooth loss.

If you are looking for a reliable way to replace missing teeth, dental implants are an ideal option that combines durability, comfort and a natural appearance.

  • What are the benefits of dental implants?

A fixed, comfortable solution: permanently anchored implants allow you to chew and speak naturally, with no movement or loosening.

Durability: implants are designed to last for many years, often for life, thanks to biocompatible materials such as titanium or zirconia.

Natural aesthetics: they closely replicate natural teeth for a harmonious smile.

Bone preservation: implants stimulate the jawbone, preventing bone loss associated with missing teeth.

Protection of neighbouring teeth: unlike bridges, implants do not require adjacent teeth to be altered.

Simple maintenance: easy to care for with routine oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups.

  • How is a dental implant placed?

Consultation and planning: initial assessment with radiographs and a detailed treatment plan.

Implant placement: performed under local anaesthesia and pain-free.

Healing period: the implant fuses with the jawbone over several months (osseointegration). This varies by patient and usually takes 6 weeks to 3 months.

Crown placement: once the implant is integrated, a crown is fitted to restore the missing tooth.

Follow-up: regular visits are scheduled to monitor the implant and maintain excellent oral hygiene.

  • How much does a dental implant cost?

An implant with a crown: from CHF 1,600.

We work with the Caisse des Médecins, allowing financing over up to 24 months, subject to the patient’s credit approval.

  • Which types of dental implants do we use?

We use Nobel Biocare and Straumann implants. These are global leaders in dental implants and restorative dentistry.

They invest heavily in research and clinical studies to validate and continuously improve their products. Nobel Biocare and Straumann implants are manufactured to strict quality standards and ISO-certified, ensuring compliance with international safety and quality requirements.

  • Why choose a clinic specialised in implantology?

Expertise: as founding president of the European Society of Implantology and an internationally recognised speaker in the field, Dr Lanners delivers precise, effective implant treatments.

Advanced technology: we use the latest implantology technologies to optimise planning and placement.

Rigorous protocols: our protocols are based on the most recent research and rely on modern, reliable materials.

  • What are the criteria for being a candidate for a dental implant?

    Oral health:

    • Healthy gums: no active periodontal disease, or periodontal treatment completed before implant placement.
    • No untreated decay: cavities must be treated before implantation.

    Amount and quality of jawbone:

    • Sufficient bone density confirmed by imaging.
    • Bone regeneration is possible if bone volume is inadequate.

    General health:

    • A medical assessment is required, with special attention to inflammatory conditions or coagulation disorders.
    • Medication: inform your dentist of any ongoing treatments.

    Lifestyle factors:

    • Smoking: cessation is often recommended before implant placement.
    • Oral hygiene: commitment to excellent hygiene, with two check-ups per year and radiographs every 12 to 24 months.
  • How do dental implants improve function and smile aesthetics?

    Improved function:

    • Efficient chewing: securely anchored implants allow you to eat all foods without restriction.
    • Clear speech: implants stabilise pronunciation, avoiding the issues sometimes caused by removable dentures.

    Natural aesthetics:

    • Authentic appearance: implant crowns are designed to perfectly mimic natural teeth.
    • Preservation of facial structure: implants prevent bone resorption and cheek collapse.

    Comfort and confidence:

    • Natural feel: implants provide comfort comparable to natural teeth and do not slip.
    • Greater self-confidence: a balanced, natural smile enhances confidence in social interactions.
  • How long do implants last and are there possible complications?

In principle, an implant can last a lifetime.

There is a 5 to 10% complication rate over five years, including screw loosening, chipping or inflammation.

Over ten years, implant survival is around 90 to 95%, meaning implants are a durable solution with a low risk of loss.

Implant loss is most often linked to failed osseointegration within the first four weeks after placement.
